How to make Desi Chalupa(Vegetarian)

Chalupa is a Mexican dish, however Desi Chalupa is a fusion food, where Chalupa recipe is fused with Indian Masalas, to give it the desi taste

Ingredients for Chalupa dough

  1. 2 cups all purpose flour/maida
  2. pinch of salt
  3. water as needed
  4. 1/2 tsp of Baking soda

Ingredients for Chalupa stuffing masala

  1. 1 cup red beans soaked into water 2 or 3 hour
  2. 1 small red onion
  3. 1 diced tomato
  4. ½ cup lettuce or cabbage
  5. ½ tsp turmeric powder
  6. ½ tsp red chilli powder
  7. ½ tsp corinder powder
  8. salt as per taste
  9. ½ cup gratted cheese
  10. 1 tbsp oil
  11. 2 cloves of chopped garlic



Preparation of dough

1) Take 2 cups of all purpose flour/Maida, add pinch of salt, 1/2 tsp baking powder; then mix together well add little water as needed and make smooth dough.

2) Cover the dough with clean cotton cloth for 10 minutes, this will allow it to get fermented

Now preparation for stuffing masala

  1. Take soaked red beans and cook them in a cooker for 15-20 mts,so as they become soft you can add little salt into it.
  2. Heat 1tbsp oil into a pan then saute red onion for few mintues until oil become separated
  3. add 2 cloves of chopped garlic into onion and sauté for few minutes.

  4. Now add boiled red beans into a pan stir for few minutes.
  5. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder and pinch of salt, we already have added, salt into boiled red beans.
  6. Stir it for few minutes until they mix well together.
  7. Add 1 cup of water and boiled until they mashed well.
  8. Chalupa stuffing masala is now ready for stuffing.

Frying Bread

1) Take the fermented dough and divide it into 5-6 lumps of equal size and at the same time in kadhai/frying put, heat the oil of your choice(which you normally used for cooking like Peanut oil, groundnut etc) over medium flame

2) take one lump, beat it, and roll it round

3) make sure, oil got heated well(if you are experienced cook,you would know or just put a tiny bit of dough to see how it worked), once the oil is ready, fry the rounded bread

4) Fry all the remaining breads

5) Once it’s fried keep the bread flat, put the stuffing Masalas that you prepared, on top of it add lettuce, shredded cheese, chopped tomatoes per your taste

6) Fold the Chalupa, by pulling two opposite sides up and Chalupa is all ready for your taste buds relish 🙂
